The tourism industry is a core pillar of economic diversification and a central player in Alberta's economy. Efforts to bolster this industry are celebrated each year with the Alto Awards, a recognition of those committed to enriching Alberta’s tourism industry and who demonstrate what can be achieved by working together. The 2018 Alto awards approached onetwosix to design an award representative of their ideals and reflective of the beauty of Alberta.
Approach
Inspired by the urban and rural experiences of Alberta, we developed a series of concepts with a focus on forms and materials that told a story. The joining of these disparate materials and shapes were representative of the many contributors to the tourism industry and use of raw materials exemplified the natural beauty waiting to be discovered.
Concept
The chosen concept presented the joining of two forms to symbolize the intersection of the man-made and the natural. One pillar is made from solid wood and polished brass representing Alberta’s forests and prairies respectively; the other pillar is formed from metal representing Alberta’s beautiful urban areas. The two components are offset from each other to create a dynamic form and to strengthen their stability while also reflecting Alberta’s mountain landscape. This award symbolizes the importance of working together, bringing together the disparate for a memorable experience.
