Pop-Upsicles
K-Days + MADE
Approach
As a starting point to our design, we focused on what the chosen theme brought to mind. Live music, good food, rides, games, hot days and warm nights were all strong contenders—but in the end we kept coming back to our universal love of FOOD.
All foodtruck staples were considered, but it was the universality of popsicles and their association with treating oneself and reprieve from the summer heat that won us over.
Sustainability, Manufacture & Materials
Designing for sustainability is a cornerstone of Onetwosix Design. When presented the opportunity by competition organizers MADE & K-Days to use [Re] Waste’s locally manufactured recycled HDPE product we knew that this would be an ideal choice to minimize the impact of production. And the material’s standard offering of three bold primary colours ultimately helped steered the direction of the sketches that would eventually become the family of Pop-Upsicles!
Durability, maintenance, local manufacture and sustainability were all factors when determining the final material choices and assembly methods. The versatility of HDPE meant we were able to come up with a family of visually striking benches that could withstand heavy use and outdoor conditions for years to come.
Production

Final Product
The Pop-Upsicle benches are now out and about in Edmonton, giving people a place to kick up their feet.
